A Series Of Basic Questions:

Via PostgreSQL by /u/FondleMyFirn

Hey guys, i'm new to SQL and I am self-learning, so PostgreSQL is my first time venturing into databases, RDMS, etc. I have several questions that do not require individual posts for each, so I thought i'd just list them here so to not clutter the forum. My relationship to working with databases will, at least in the short term, focus primarily on just executing queries as opposed to managing or administering a database for a company. My goal is to just get good with SQL to add it as a skill, and hopefully use it when I build projects for a portfolio.

  1. I am trying to use PopSQL as a basic text editor because sometimes if I write a query and make a mistake, it becomes tedious to fix my mistake from the CLI. However, I don't know where you'd find the file to set your editor. This link was helpful, but I could not find the .bashrc file in the folder where all of the post downloads are stored. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.
  2. In trying to set up PopSQL, I need to connect it to my local postgres database. This link was helpful for getting everything set up. However, because the databases I am working with are just ones I have on my local machine, I don't really know what the "Hostname" would be in my case.
  3. Is there something better than PopSQL I should look into? I'm completely open to suggestions, I just do not want to be writing queries straight into the CLI because i'm bound to burn a lot of time trying to fix my mistakes.
  4. Given that I am really just interested in executing queries and some other basic uses, is it better to spend my time in psql or pgAdmin4? I think psql is probably a bit more difficult, so i'm inclined to learn that, but would be curious to know what you use in your day-to-day.

Lastly, I apologize for the PopSQL focus. I just stumbled on it when looking for a text-editor, so I am not trying to shill it as a product or anything.
