Best way to migrate to a new server?

Via PostgreSQL by /u/dipitinmayo

We need to migrate a biggish (400gb+) Postgres installation to a new server as we are moving to a new hosting solution (non standard cloud provider).

I'm looking for some practical reading material or suggestions on how to accomplish this with minimal downtime.

I've read a few things about pg_basebackup, but I'd like to see it in actual action outside of the posgres documentation (videos, in depth tutorial, etc).

I've also read up on repmgr, their documentation is really good, but I wonder if it's overkill for what we are trying to achieve - I'm not looking into having a cluster setup in the future, simply want to migrate from one machine to another. Could I setup repmgr to do the replication and then elevate the new server to master and finally remove repmgr entirely?

Any input welcome!
